You say you understand
What it is to be in pain
You say you understand
What it is to be tired
But you don’t understand
You don’t understand what it’s like
Being so tired you can’t sleep
Being in so much pain you can’t move
To lay on the floor
But not crying or letting on
You don’t understand

You say you understand
What it is like being sad
You say you understand
What it is like to take medications
But you don’t understand
You just don’t understand what it is like
To have lost who you were
To be told it’s in your head
Being stuck in a different world
Being on so many medications that make you better
But living with the side effects
When panadol does nothing
You just don’t understand

You say you understand
What it is like to be overwhelmed
You say you understand
What it is like to rely on people
But the truth is you don’t understand
What it is like to want to sleep
Until the busy times pass
You don’t understand
What it is like to say yes
But meaning no
How hard it is to ask for help
What it is like to need people 24/7
The truth is you don’t understand

You don’t understand
The anguish and fear
The frustration and anger
The highs and the lows
You don’t know what it is like
To not remember what it felt like
Not to be in pain
You don’t know what it is like
To be stared at because of a brace
To be told your too young
You couldn’t understand

Too tired to sleep...in so much pain you can't move at all, and just lay there...needing people to care for you 24/7...oh, God, is it tough. I'm here for you whenever, okay? It seems like we have a lot in common, and you can never have to many friends.

((Do you ever get really mad when you're suffering and someone will say, "Well, on the bright side..."? I mean, gosh darn it, I know there's a bright side, and I'll find it in my own darn time, so "back the heck of and stop pretending like this all isn't so bad!" ya know?))

"Hey Mom, where are the paper towels?"
"What did you spill now, Alex?"
"Oh don't worry, just my blood."
o.O

"So, Kyle, how's the weather?"
:iconimamuso:

I just don't understand the logic of some people. I'm pretty up-beat most of the time, so when I do complain to someone (or not necessarily complain, but be honest about what is going on instead of telling everyone I'm good), it doesn't hurt for them to show some sympathy.

On the other hand, sometimes when people show too much sympathy outwardly, it's aggravating. If they're handling it worse than the one who's actually dealing with it first-hand, it's incredibly annoying.

empathy is better than sympathy i feel. i use something called the spoon theory to help explain (www.butyoudontlooksick.com/the_spoon_theory/) dont know if you have ever read it

I feel so stupid...I was thinking of empathy, but wrote sympathy instead. It's past 2am, I am extremely tired and in a good amount of pain from going to Church this morning, so at this point I cannot be held responsible for anything I say! LOL

Wow, I'd never heard of it that way! I've explained my disease to others in a similar way, but she did it very well with her spoons =) I'll have to show my mom that tomorrow. She's got a back injury, spinal stenosis, a back injury, carpel tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and sleep apnea among other things, so I'm sure she will appreciate it, too.

Haha, you should see when my grandma, my mother and I go to the doctors together. They're like, "Which one is the patient? Is it the one in the wheelchair (me), the one using a walker (my grandmother) or the one pushing the girl in the wheelchair with a folding-cane that she has to use when she's not pushing the girl in the wheelchair (my mom)?" And all the while we're cracking jokes...in the waiting room of the pain clinic. More than once we've been told to shut up and act like we're in pain "for goodness' sake!", LOL.

None of us actually see the doctors, but when my father is at work and my grandmother has to drive my mother, since I have no one to watch me I get dragged along. It is quite a sight to behold!
